The last game in Klaipeda's Group D saw Ukraine beat Belgium 74-61 and send Georgia through to the next round at the detriment of Bulgaria. Following the win, Ukraine took a 2-3 record and created a three-way tie with Bulgaria and Georgia. Georgia won the tie-breaker after losing by less than 14 points against Bulgaria earlier today. Bulgaria needed Belgium to win, but, with Ukraine prevailing, Bulgaria eventually dropped down to fourth with Ukraine in fifth. Belgium dropped to 0-5 and finished their first EuroBasket performance in 18 years without any wins and in the last place in Group D. "We came here with a desire to qualify to the next round and we failed to do that," said Ukraine's Denys Lukashov. "We won two games after a very long time in EuroBasket but our goal wasn't just to win a couple of games, we wanted to go to Vilnius yet we're going now back home and it's disappointing." Oleksiy Pecherov was the top scorer for Ukraine with 15 points, Viacheslav Kravtsov added 13 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Oleksandr Kolchenko chipped in with 10 points. Sam Van Rossom paced Belgium with 17 points, Dimitri Lauwers contributed 13 and six assists assists and Maxime De Zeeuw had 10 points. Belgium had the better start but already in the first quarter Ukraine recovered and a 17-0 run gave them a 22-16 lead early in the second period. A few minutes later, Pecherov scored seven more points in a 12-2 spurt which, combined with the previous one, added up to a 31-5 run and a insurmountable double-digit lead for Ukraine. From this point the gap continued to grow and Belgium never managed to put the Ukrainian lead in danger. |
