A magical 26 points in less than 24 minutes by Ingus Bankevics was the highlight for Latvia as they secured a second win in the EuroBasket Qualifying Round with a crushing 87-67 victory against Finland who comprehensively failed to build on their surprise success over high flying Israel in their previous game. It was certainly an all action display by Bankevics who was at the heart of a Latvian offensive explosion. With the scores tied 9-9 after the opening five minutes, Latvia caught fire and scored 20 points during the next five minutes to take what proved to be an unassailable 29-16 lead into the second quarter. The home team continued to pile on the agony in the second quarter and Finland couldn't wait to get off court and into the sanctuary of the locker rooms after Latvia continued to run rampage at 54-26. It threatened to get embarrassing for Finland during the second half and while they battled to get themselves back into the game, their realistic ambition was to add some respectability to the score line - especially without the services of Teemu Rannikko. They found themselves 71-47 behind after three quarters and little had changed by the time the final buzzer had sounded with Latvia strolling to victory. In addition to the red-hot Bankevics, Rihards Kuksiks was also on good form from downtown and he also made 4 three-pointers for 15 points. Tuukka Kotti had 13 points and 9 rebounds for the losing team. |

Thirteen turnovers in the second half - this is not justified because of the slippery floor. The Finnish team as a whole we were surprised. That is their game and we were ready."
