| 17.08.2010 Another huge crowd in Skopje gave their endorsement to another FYR of Macedonia victory as they kept up the two way fight for superiority with Great Britain at the top of Group B of EuroBasket Qualifying Round with a 71-55 success against Ukraine.
The classy and energetic Bo McCalebb typified another strong performance by the home team as he led the way with 18 points while Ukraine looked in vain for someone to step up and keep their faint hopes alive but nobody did.
There was nothing between the teams in a keenly contested first quarter, only a buzzer beating triple by Pero Antic the difference as he put the home side into a 21-19 lead. By midway through the second quarter, both teams were struggling at the offensive end and the game was still waiting for a decisive run at 25-25. It belatedly arrived when FYR of Macedonia scored seven straight points and that helped them into a 35-29 lead as the teams left the court to head to the locker rooms. When the teams returned to the floor, the hosts continued where they left off and increased their advantage to eleven at 46-35. After a strong start to the final period by FYR of Macedonia, Ukraine wilted and never threatened to launch any kind of serious fight back. Veteran center Todor Gechevski contributed 13 points and seven rebounds while Denys Lukashov had 10 points and six rebounds for Ukraine in an otherwise forgettable night's work for the away team. |
