What‘s the secret of Lithuanian basketball? The time has come to reveal the truth - it's amber!
Lithuanian basketball players believe in amber as a powerful talisman.
Historically, coaches would give a piece of amber to every young basketball talent who was ready to join the Lithuania national team. Leaving your amber at home before an important game was considered to be a bad omen.
When Lithuania was named the EuroBasket 2011 host, legendary player Arvydas Sabonis gave his piece of amber to the people of Lithuania.
It soon became a national talisman by the name of Amberis, a cheerful character, embodying the eternal and invincible spirit of Lithuanian basketball.
Amberis is a lively character. His enthusiasm and passion bring joy and a smile on everyone's face.
Once you meet Amberis, you will remain his friend for life. He is curious, brave, intelligent and tireless, making everyone's mood better. The passion and beauty of the game of basketball are far more important things to Amberis than the result. Amberis admires fair play and sportsmanlike behaviour.
Amberis loves basketball, of course. Being so active and energetic however, he also performs acrobatic stunts during his spare time.
Amberis has a great interest in culture too. He is a great admirer of Lithuanian folk songs and dances, but he's intrigued by foreign cultures too, so don't be so surprised if you see him dancing the flamenco!
WHERE CAN YOU MEET AMBERIS?
Amberis will make his appearance at various sites during EuroBasket 2011: City squares, bars and pubs, bus and train stations but, first and foremost, at basketball playgrounds.
He will be on hand to inspire and accompany fans in their celebrations, but also comfort them after a disappointing result.
