15.09.2011

The first part, on Thursday, of the FIBA Europe 3on3 in Kaunas was a huge success, despite averse weather conditions in the capital of basketball.

12 girls' and 24 boys' teams suited up in the U15 category to determine the winner of EuroBasket 2011 quarter-final tickets and a trophy.

But the winners were not the only ones walking away with prizes.

700 Molten basketballs and several hundred t-shirts and reversible basketball jerseys were distributed among participants and fans.

The action kicked off at 13:00 on eight courts simultaneously, but was stopped repeatedly by heavy rain showers.

Not that the players could have cared less!

Yes, it's raining in Kaunas but the FIBA Europe 3on3 players couldn't care less!

The teams stayed on the court so that play was resumed quickly, and at 15:00 the Zalgiris Dancers, well known for their on-court entertainment at the EuroBasket, performed outdoors.

Another highlight was the involvement of Lithuanian legend and captain of the gold-medal -winning team at EuroBasket 2003, Saulius Stombergas, and Jonas Maciulis, who missed the home EuroBasket through injury.

The two idols suited up to play with kids from children's homes in an exhibition game.

The more than 150 players could not get enough of playing and used the open court for pick-up games throughout the competition.

The event was visited by more than 2,000 spectators, among them several of the teams that usually take the main court at the EuroBasket.

The Slovenian national team, already familiar with 3on3 events through the first FIBA Europe 3on3 in Ljubljana in August, stopped by and had a closer look.

The biggest frustration happened at around 17:30, when the rain coats were put on the baskets and teams had to stop their games.

They take home great memories and the winning teams went straight to Kauno Arena to watch France beat Greece in an exciting EuroBasket quarter-final.

The girls will be the youngest FIBA Europe 3on3 participants in Kaunas.

In addition to the regular tournament games, an exhibition game of the Lithuanian wheelchair basketball national team will also take place.
