First Mentioned in 1503, Panevezys obtained city rights in 1813. The city, located between the rivers Nevėžis and Lėvuo, became an imnportant centre of industrialisation under Soviet reign. Especially in the a960s and 1980s, several bigger companies were founded in the area, bolstering the economic weight of the city. Main Attractions:

As early as in 1951 the Panevezys team Spartakas were the best among the strongest sports association SPARTAKAS in the USSR and won the medals of champions in Odessa (coach V.Variakojis). The young basketball players A.Matačiūnas, R.Sargūnas, J.Žičkus, A.Butkūnas, V.Butkūnas, V.Juknevičius, R.Petrauskas, E.Žurauskas, V.Stalilionis, S.Atraškevičius, E.Kuodys used to play there. The first three players later used to play in the representational team of Lithuania, Zalgiris Kaunas. The latter won the Cup of the USSR in 1953. In 1971 Larisa Vinčaitė from Panevezys baceme the World Champion with the National Team of the USSR. A new, excellent generation of basketball players trained by a well known Lithuanian coach Raimundas Sargūnas started its way in the 1980s in Panevezys. The players V. Masalskis, V. Andriūnas, J. Kazlauskas and R. Čivilis represented the Lithuanian National Team for many years. They won medals in the championships of the Soviet Union by playing for Zalgiris Kaunas and Statyba Vilnius. The smart players Jonas Kazlauskas and Gintaras Leonavičius became famous basketball coaches. In 1985 and 1988 the Panevezys team Lietkabelis (coach.V.Paškauskas) won the Lithuanian Championship. A Basketball school, where the well-known Lithuanian coaches R. Sargūnas, V. Alekna and B. Dargužytė-Indreliūnienė used to work, was opened in 1978. Panevezys Sports School was a turning page in the basketball history of the city. Its students G. Einikis, A. Pazdrazdis, R. Brazdauskis, D. Adomaitis and V. Tuomaitė became medal winners of the Olympic Games. J. Jutelytė, and J. Vilutytė won gold medals at European Championships, G.Markevičius became a vice champion. The best Lithuanian basketball players, the Olympic and World Champions Arvydas Sabonis and Šarunas Marčiulionis used to study at the Panevezys Sports School and learned from the coach R. Sargūnas. Panevezys has a representational Men Basketball Team in Lithuanian Basketball League since the very beginning of the league (1993). The best result was a 6th place in 2000. At present, Gintaras Leonavičius is the coach of the team. He used to be a player and the captain of that team for many years. 9 coaches are working on the future of basketball in the city and 350 young basketball players in 18 teams train at the sports centre and represent the city in the Lithuanian League of Pupils. |
