Hungary Deny Ukraine Comeback

26.08.2010

Hungary and Ukraine met in EuroBasket Qualifying Round Group B in Szombathely with pride as the only prize to play for and it was the home team who emerged victorious as they claimed an 83-75 success.

Having looked confident and having built up a comfortable lead during the third quarter, Hungary made hard work of despatching Ukraine after allowing them to come back into the game during the final quarter.

While the visitors edged the first quarter 14-13, it was the home team that began to find their rhythm in the second period.

Initially down by 24-21, they posted a 15-3 run to take control with an alley-oop by Adam Hanga getting the crowd on their feet coming out of an urgently needed Ukraine time-out.

Leading 41-34 at the midway point of the game, Ukraine could make no impression on the lead whatsoever and even fell seventeen points behind at 62-45.

However, the hosts relaxed a little too much in the fourth, perhaps thinking they had done the job and they were almost made to pay.

Ukraine rallied and got to within two points at 64-62 after nine unanswered points and some great work by Serhiy Lishchuk.

Thankfully for the home supporters, their team shrugged off the comeback by Ukraine and stepped it up again down the stretch to ease away when it mattered to secure a third win of the campaign.

Akos Keller had 17 points and 7 rebounds for the home team while Marton Fodor and Adam Hanga buried seven triples between them.

Lishchuk had 16 points and 5 rebounds in just 21 minutes for Ukraine.
