Finland international guard Petteri Koponen won't play again this season for Virtus Bologna because of a stress fracture in his left foot. The club's doctors have examined the player and determined the extent of the injury which is likely to sideline him for four months. The 22-year-old's absence could not have come at a worse time for Virtus, last year's EuroChallenge winners. They are fifth in the Lega A standings but just a half game ahead of Sigma Coatings Montegranaro. Koponen is shooting nearly 40% (35 of 88) from behind the arc and averaging almost 12 points per game. The announcement is also worrying for Finland, who will need Koponen for their 'group of death' EuroBasket Division A campaign this summer. The Finns will take on Latvia, Israel, Italy and Montenegro, with their first game against the Montenegrins on August 5. |
