Ricky Finally Speaks After Latest Honour

13.05.2008

FIBA Europe's Young Player of the Year for 2007 Ricky Rubio temporarily broke his silence and spoke to the media about being honoured as one of the Spanish league ACB's Ideal Quintet.

Rubio, one of hottest talents ever to emerge from Spain, made the elite team along with DKV Joventut teammate Rudy Fernandez, Bilbao's Marcelinho Huertas, Real Madrid's Felipe Reyes and the league's Player of the Year Marc Gasol of Akasvayu Girona.

"To be recognised as one of the best players in the top league on the continent is something important and it fills me with pride," Rubio said.

"I don't speak to the press because I am trying to concentrate on my studies and basketball, and that's enough.

"I apologise to all of the media, but from next year, I'll be able to speak to the press."

Rubio might have a chance to make Spain's Olympic team this summer, an astonishing opportunity for a 17-year-old.

He will not allow himself to even think about the possibilities, though.

"From now until the Olympics, there is still a lot of time," he said.

"Right now, my entire focus is on the play-offs.

"The national team is a great goal but there are a lot of guards and there is a lot of competitition."
