Montenegro Earn First Win At EuroBasket

Turning Point: Valdimir Dasic drove to the basket under intense pressure during overtime and finished to make it a two shot game at 69-65 with only a minute remaining.

Game Hero: Dasic posted a quite remarkable double-double of 20 points and 16 rebounds to carry his team to victory.

Stats Don't Lie: Montenegro made the most of their superior size to out rebound their opponent by 50 to 39 and limit second chance opportunities for F.Y.R. of Macedonia.

A stunning double-double by Vladimir Dasic propelled Montenegro to their first ever victory at EuroBasket.

While it was not exactly pretty, that won't matter to Dasic or his team-mates who enjoyed writing another line in the history books as they won 70-65 in an absorbing overtime encounter against F.Y.R. of Macedonia.

There was little to separate both teams in what was an intense struggle and at times, very much a war of attrition.

Crucially F.Y.R. of Macedonia were without veteran Todor Gechevski and his experience was sorely missed in such a tight game.

With both teams struggling to find any kind of offensive rhythm, it was only a smart baseline drive play by Vlado Ilievski on the half time buzzer which opened up some form of brief daylight as he helped F.Y.R. of Macedonia into a 30-25 lead.

Montenegro responded after they emerged from the locker room and heading down the stretch in the last quarter, looked to be in control at 58-51.

However F.Y.R. of Macedonia rallied and levelled with only a handful of seconds left.

In a nervy finale, Montenegro kept their fans on the edge of their seats and prolonged the agony as Nikola Pekovic agonisingly missed the chance to seal the deal in regulation with a tough turnaround shot in the paint.

However there was to be no denying Montenegro their moment and fittingly it was Dasic who finally led his team over the finishing line with a big play in overtime to finally break F.Y.R. of Macedonia hearts.
